Life Story
Perry William Scott, son of the late Jessie Mae Mole and Elmer Theodore Scott, was born June 15, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Perry was one of 10 children and loved by many.
Educated in Philadelphia Public Schools, Perry graduated from Edward W. Bok Technical High School. Shortly after graduation, Perry enlisted in the U.S. Army where he trained and qualified as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne 319th Artillery. Perry served his country in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1966. In 1969, Perry completed his U.S. Army Reserve obligation. During his military service, Perry was known to send letters to his family and financial gifts back home to his mother. For his valor, Perry was awarded The Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, and Marksman Medal (M1 Rifle).
In 1970, Perry met the love of his life and they married in 1971. Together, they had two children, Perry W. Scott II, Amber Scott Woodruff and to complete their family, a bonus son, Sean Martin. Perry enjoyed watching his children grow and was always proud of their accomplishments. Whether it was the birth of his grandchildren, wrestling, piano recitals or late night casino runs, Perry was surely overjoyed.
Perry’s favorite pastime was fishing. He once said that he would never own a boat, but he did! He purchased a boat in 1986; which was the one thing he really desired. Perry and his fishing buddies would go deep sea fishing whenever they had the chance. They fished up and down the east coast catching perch, porgies, flounder and even the occasional shark! Perry was known for frying the fish he’d catch, and sharing it with friends and family at regular fish fry gatherings.
Perry worked for many years as a Maintenance Mechanic and Maintenance Foreman with Vertis Inc, Stabilus and Gas Springs. Perry retired in 2006 due to illness. After regaining his strength, he did home improvement jobs at low or no cost for friends and relatives. A natural born leader, Perry took many people under his wing in and out of the workplace. Through his work he found lifelong friends, who became family.
Perry loved the Lord with all his heart. After his recovery in 2006, he joined Salem Baptist Church in the presence of his wife and children. He stayed connected to friends and family by lending a helping hand, teaching a skill or cooking a good meal. Perry’s friendly and easygoing spirit will be missed by all who loved him.
Perry is preceded in death by his parents: Jessie Mae and Elmer Scott; siblings: Alfreda Lewis (Leroy); Elmer Scott Jr (Cynthia); Verdenia Finger (James); Barbara Scott; Brenda Brown (General); Deitra Edwards (Kirk); Alvenia Clements (Joe) and special friend, Douglass Faxon, who was fondly called “Uncle Doug” by Perry’s children.
Perry will forever be loved by those he left behind. Perry leaves to mourn: his wife, Barbara Scott; son, Perry W. Scott II (Tinika); daughter, Amber Scott Woodruff (William); granddaughter, Avery Camille Scott; grandson, Scott Andwele Woodruff; one brother, Richard Scott (Brenda); one sister Cynthia Waters and those he loved like his own children: Danelle Cooper, Sean Martin, Jackee Scott and Myra Hawkins. Perry’s legacy will be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews and close friends and family in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Pittsburgh.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their continued thoughts, words of comfort and prayers.
